View Full Version : Top Speeds
AvengerArmy 04-28-2008, 10:41 PM Stupid question cause i know many of you have, but has anyone pushed their avenger to the top speed, before it starts to restrict u, if so how fast did u get, and has any one gotten around it? i hit a buck ten before i called it quites, but even at that speed still a smooth ride
Quiet Lunatic 04-28-2008, 10:45 PM 117-118 - didn't get an exact yet. It won't be a problem though once a tuner comes out as you can remove it but uhhh...I wouldn't drive faster without higher rated tires, not that you need to go that fast but yeah :)
Quiet Lunatic 04-28-2008, 10:53 PM SXT 2.4L, 115 then the RPMs dropped but it held steady.
Reaper 04-28-2008, 10:56 PM come on people.. I guess im crazy but, on the NY interstate r/t awd shuts off at 120 maybe if my accel is going well 121 mph.. it was so smooth, that my wife was sleeping through the whole thing, I had to wake her up so she could see it for herself she said.. "uhhh.. cool i guess" and rolls over to the doorside and sleeps
markio 04-28-2008, 11:24 PM I was driving to my parents today and took the Interstate/bypass and was cruising at about 70. I decided to see how it responded when mashed it to the floor when it was already going pretty fast, and it hit 100 in a flash. I slowed back down at about 105 cause there are lots of cops in this area, and it is dangerous. There was no one around, and I think if I am alone again I MIGHT try and see what I get.

I'll be redoing a dyno for mine so I can get an exact as we'll be in 5th gear this time around, I think it will probably max out.
AvengerArmy 04-29-2008, 05:49 AM hahaha awesome people, wicked awesome

Quiet Lunatic 04-29-2008, 06:00 AM Not doing it on public roads, here their is a law that will crush my car in front of my sad eyes! That alone i cant do it, risk way to high!

That is what is so great about the AWD, it is a very smooth ridding car.
INDaveng 04-29-2008, 08:07 AM me and the wife 101 if we went any faster we would pasted our exit
Quiet Lunatic 04-29-2008, 09:06 AM Not doing it on public roads, here their is a law that will crush my car in front of my sad eyes! That alone i cant do it, risk way to high!Well I guess you won't be doing that will ya! That must hurt.

Here too!!! If you go over the speed limit by more than 50 kph (30 mph) they grab your licence, your car and you!! After 7 days, you can get your stuff back but HUGE fines, impound fees and IF they catch you again.....Bye, bye car!!!
masked avenger
AvengerArmy 04-29-2008, 12:48 PM :wtf:wow, im sorry, those laws suck. i couldnt even imagine such a thing as losing my car and watching it being crushed... that would be enough for me to drive the speed limit
slimonsays 04-29-2008, 01:26 PM I have had my 2.7 up to 117 and had not had the limiter kick in. Would have kept going but would have missed my exit. The speed was GPS clocked and surprisingly was really close to the speedometer reading.
ZookerT 04-29-2008, 03:04 PM I buried it..........
Reaper 04-29-2008, 05:27 PM I still would have hoped my wife thought it was cool... To much to ask I suppose, I wonder what would happen if I disengage the governer... went to my dealer and they told me its a program governer

Once a tuner comes out you can turn it off. But as I stated earlier, driving faster than that on low rated tires is a no-no

Hey Reaper, I have same car, same color up in Monticello. Had it up to 120 when S/D.
I was on the Quickway, making Rt 17 live up to its nickname. Man at 120 this thing was smooth, and with no gov. I'm sure it would fly. I'm with Zeeman though. I don't want to drive like that too dangerous, but I had to see what it would do once.
AvenDanger 04-30-2008, 07:54 AM I had an SVT Contour with z rated tires in college, and being young and stupid, I took it up to 145 on the interstate one night. It was great, until I tried slowing down. I eased off the gas and when the weight shifted more onto the front end, it started shaking like a mad man! So my advice to all is to make freaking sure that your car is properly aligned and that your tires are in good condition and balanced and that your brakes are in tip top shape before going ridiculously fast. I learned in a hurry that just because it's smooth while you're going, doesn't mean it will be smooth or even safe when you try to slow down. I'm not preaching, just hoping nobody else makes the same dumb mistake I did.

I'm not preaching, just hoping nobody else makes the same dumb mistake I did.I've known two people who died from their brakes failing. I forgot all about it when I was seeing how fast I could go on the parkway. One of the accidents were two guys that I knew that had a Barracuda and they were going I think close to 200. They hit a concrete wall and the car was in pieces. The other was my sisters boyfriend who she lived with for 5 years and they were to be married. He had a 68 Camaro and they think his brakes gave out. He was skimming large boulders and went off the road and hit the only big tree on that road. So just be careful. I also when I was 18 had an accident while racing. I beat the person, But my brakes weren't good enough when it came to slowing down and there was a turn up ahead and railroad tracks. I went off the tracks and the train was coming. My friends in other vehicles called the police and stopped the train. After that I was paying for 2 cars and listening to my father complain.
maxpayne23 04-30-2008, 10:02 PM I was coming back from Massachusettes this past sunday and there were so many cops the whole way it was like they were looking for someone. I did get a chance to get up to 110 in Ohio.
DutchAvenger 05-01-2008, 05:58 AM I started a thread some while ago about the maximum speeds people drove in their Avengers. Anyway, I haven't discovered a speedlimiter on my diesel, only a rev-limit.
Once it hits the red zone, you're in the dead zone.
AvengerArmy 05-01-2008, 08:29 AM how do u like the diesel avenger man? good power and fuel economy or would u prefer a gas engine?
DutchAvenger 05-01-2008, 01:17 PM how do u like the diesel avenger man? good power and fuel economy or would u prefer a gas engine?
Well, I like the Diesel a lot. I drive leases a couple of years now and it's common here to get Diesels if you drive more than 15.000 km's a year. I drive 50.000 km's a year, so the lease company only let's you choose a Diesel. The reason: you get good mileage, a better fuelprice compared to gasoline and the engine supposably lasts longer.
I had my testdrive in an SE with a normal engine on gasoline, but we only get a 2.0 liter manual 5 speed or a 2.7 liter automatic one on gasoline. I did the testdrive in the 2.0 gasoline and it didn't impress me much. The Diesel however has a reasonable acceleration and good topspeed, but more important, very high torque and low rev's.
It drives like a little muscular truck.
If I had to pick freely, I would go for the 2.7 gasoline, but I am very pleased with the Diesel. One misconception: Chrysler puts "CRD" on the trunk, which normally stands for "Common Rail Diesel", the new way of injecting Diesel. Unfortunately, the Diesel engine in the Avenger comes from Volkswagen, who won't come up with a Common Rail before 2009. So, under the hood is a genuine 2 liter VW TDI (turbo diesel injection) from VW. A reliable burner, but no CRD.
Chrysler now changed the meaning of CRD to "Chrysler Runs Diesel".
Quiet Lunatic 05-01-2008, 01:29 PM Wow that's pretty good information there Dutch...never knew anything about that side of the cars :)
DutchAvenger,
Does the 2.7 come with the 4-speed or 6-speed automatic?
How much does Gas and Diesel fuel cost over there?
AvengerArmy 05-01-2008, 10:20 PM the 2.7 comes with a 4 speed, only the r/t 3.5L comes with the 6 speed autostick. gas costs about 3.50 a gallon for reg and diesel is more but not sure how much
AvengerArmy 05-01-2008, 10:21 PM o hahaha, answered for wrong person, sorry thought dutch was asking the q, my bad
DutchAvenger 05-02-2008, 07:28 AM DutchAvenger,
Does the 2.7 come with the 4-speed or 6-speed automatic?
How much does Gas and Diesel fuel cost over there?
The 2.7 comes with 6 speed automatic. The 2.0 gasoline comes with 5 speed manual.
The CRD comes with 6 speed manual. No other choices.
Today the fuelprices in the Netherlands in US $ are:
1 liter Diesel $ 2.10
1 liter Gasoline low octane (95) $ 2.49 :shakehead:
1 liter Gasoline high octane (98) $ 2,56 :3-startled:
How does that compare to the US?
Sphinx 05-02-2008, 10:35 AM That is crazy... that is near $10 a gallon... :wow:
AvengerArmy 05-02-2008, 11:23 AM 2.7L with a six speed automatic, really? thats wicked cool, that would be great over here, really improve ur gas mileage with that.wow, ur paying just about 3 times as much as we are here if sphinx's calculations r right...:str:
AvengerArmy 05-04-2008, 09:21 PM mwhahaha 113 the other day, now i know we all know its not safe, but god damn is it fun and what an adrenaline rush, i plan on pinning that needle before the end of the summer
Quiet Lunatic 05-04-2008, 10:11 PM I certainly hope everyone is on a very long straight, flat road with no traffic and good visability, or a good highway.
Don't mean to be a kill joy, but would really hate to hear about someone stopping quickly when meeting another object.
I reached the limiter at 115.
amradiar 05-04-2008, 11:25 PM ive went to about 160, but I didnt want to get caught so I slowed back down... Dont want to lose my car!
Quiet Lunatic 05-04-2008, 11:50 PM ive went to about 160, but I didnt want to get caught so I slowed back down... Dont want to lose my car!
That's KPH right? lol
AvenDanger 05-05-2008, 09:15 AM That's KPH right? lol
No, silly. He put a flux capacitor in the back! I did that with my Taurus, it doubled the top speed. Now I can go 80 mph. Ford Power!!!
Sorry for the corny joke, I didn't sleep much last night...

LOL No problem I found it quite amusing :p
AvengerArmy 05-05-2008, 11:30 AM hahaha, that was pretty good Danger:hah:
AvengerMP 05-05-2008, 12:28 PM I maxed my avenger out I think the needle can't go any higher and it starts to restrict. That is the cool thing about the autobahn no limit in some areas.
Avenger R/T, 3.5L
AvengerArmy 05-05-2008, 05:33 PM ooo autoban, every car enthusiasts wet dream:48:, i dont know how much you hear this but thank you for your service, im a 13B, but im state side
tfrias34 11-17-2008, 02:32 AM Just got back from a road trip today and on a long straight stretch of road, I hit 118 before the limiter dropped me down to 4k rpms and 115mph.
mk4supra 11-17-2008, 06:12 AM The highest I've ever done was 95. I'm only 17 right now but ill get it up there one of these days
avenger1 11-17-2008, 12:04 PM Most I've got up to was 95 and it was quite by accident trying to pass an accelerating car. Slowed right down when I realized just in time to waive to the state police with his radar out. My red sxt with sports package is kinda hard to miss when its sparkling shiney. I live in Massachusettes where for the most part if u speed you get caught. They must have radar in the street lights and a cop between every exit LOL cause they're always right there when I think about openning it up. Whew! That one would have cost me like 1000+ and then insurance penalty for 5 years. Other than the highway there is not a road I would trust around here to go past 70 due to the potholes and constant road repairs. I guess I'll have to live vicariously by your experiences going fast.
Heard they open up a track up in NH though for at least motorcycle amatures and clock em. Wonderring if any of the nascar tracks do that for us regular folks in cars? Would make one hell of a meet and greet to take turns maxing out! LOL! Anyone know?
Waveblaster 11-17-2008, 07:10 PM Just got back from a road trip today and on a long straight stretch of road, I hit 118 before the limiter dropped me down to 4k rpms and 115mph.
They are governed at 118mph about. I had my RT in 5th gear and it was around 4-5 thousand RPM's is all. 6th gear is only for millage.
4th gear will do around 100mph.
WestAust 11-18-2008, 08:04 AM OK I have done 210Kpm that’s about 130mph for you ‘all! But it still had not wound out 4th gear.. 4sp Auto! I would not recommend doing in unless you have tires rated and the car is lowered because it didn't cope too well in the corners.
avenger1 11-18-2008, 10:36 AM would not recommend doing in unless you have tires rated and the car is lowered because it didn't cope too well in the corners. ummm... You did 130 cornering?!? Wow!
tfrias34 11-20-2008, 03:19 AM Ok, yeah, thats a little above what I would do with corners WestAus. lol For those speeds, its just long straight aways for me. lol
WestAust 11-20-2008, 10:05 AM Yeah, to clarify my statement, The Hwy I was on has LONG SWEEPING bends... perhaps corners was the wrong word.
But it was too fast for me... I don't even think I would do that speed on the track down here... too short.
DutchAvenger 11-20-2008, 02:01 PM Recently I had business to do in Germany and took the Autobahn. Under perfect conditions (sunny weather, flat road) I took the Avenger (Diesel) to 134 mph.
That's was it's absolute limit and I did not get the impression that there was more juice to squeeze out of it.
The car handled extremely well and comfortable even at that speed and never gave me a feeling of not being safe.
DustyDuster 11-20-2008, 03:32 PM I hit 90 once right after I got the Avenger. I wasn't used to that 3.5 V6 yet. I thought I was going 65...
silver1omo 11-20-2008, 05:33 PM I did 200kph aprox 124mph in an interstate toll road. She refused to go faster.
By the way, going at that speed she "floats" to much, so I decided not to do it again unless I lower her. I think that she behaves a lot better around 160-170kph (99-111mph). Lately I prefer to respect the speed limits, I don't want to pay another ticket :p
Quiet Lunatic 11-22-2008, 08:03 AM No, silly. He put a flux capacitor in the back! I did that with my Taurus, it doubled the top speed. Now I can go 80 mph. Ford Power!!!
Sorry for the corny joke, I didn't sleep much last night...
I also found it quite amusing ... but we have a dead Ford Ranger out back that prompts a lot of witty Ford comments around here, much to Outlaw's chagrin.
I pushed mine to nearly 115 mph once. Backed off because it was a little scary how easy it was to do!
Olaviman 07-16-2009, 04:55 PM I tried to reach max speed 210km/h promised to 2.7l v6 engine, but all I got was speedlimiter at 180km/h! WTF:wow: Why my car has that limiter?
Robbie 07-16-2009, 09:55 PM Not doing it on public roads, here their is a law that will crush my car in front of my sad eyes! That alone i cant do it, risk way to high!
Yikes!!! Man you guys are brutal down there.
MackDaddyMark 07-17-2009, 08:30 AM 120..but it took forever to go from 115-120...man this POS 4 speed auto sucks after 70mph...I really wish I had just one extra gear and a better ratio..lol and I agree with the above poster..forget about changing lanes after 85 thing feels like a boat..(atleast with the SE suspension) Be Safe Out There Boys & Girls!
CSC1978 07-17-2009, 09:45 AM On my way to HIN 2009 I had her up to 109 110 and she held up well
silver1omo 07-17-2009, 09:49 AM 120..but it took forever to go from 115-120...man this POS 4 speed auto sucks after 70mph...I really wish I had just one extra gear and a better ratio..lol and I agree with the above poster..forget about changing lanes after 85 thing feels like a boat..(atleast with the SE suspension) Be Safe Out There Boys & Girls!
I got the eibach prokit springs and it really helps the handling. I want to upgrade the rear anti sway bar as well. If you can get a Caliber 2.4l with a 5sp manual, why not an Avenger?!
MikeAvenger08 07-22-2009, 04:57 PM On the way to the beach my stock 2.4 liter avenger got to 119 then the little 99 accord behind me blew its engine lol the accord had a CAI, Flowmaster, and Chip lol i love it
Sparq 07-23-2009, 09:33 AM Much as I'd love to try a flat-out run with my RT just to see what it can do, the law here classifies anything 50kph over the posted limit as street racing (even if you're the only vehicle in sight) - Mandatory car impound, court date, up to $10,000 fine, license suspensions, etc etc etc. Even if you manage to win in court, you're still out the money to get your car out of impound.
That said, I hit about 165kph with an FWD RT I test drove before I bought my AWD. I couldn't believe it....my old Neon was shaking itself apart and struggling up to 145, but the Avenger blew past that so smoothly I didn't notice how fast I was driving for a while.
Quiet Lunatic 07-23-2009, 06:53 PM lol va was that wat back when i was in service and stationed there. lost my total tricked out 71 nova.
silver1omo 07-24-2009, 10:20 AM That said, I hit about 165kph with an FWD RT I test drove before I bought my AWD. I couldn't believe it....my old Neon was shaking itself apart and struggling up to 145, but the Avenger blew past that so smoothly I didn't notice how fast I was driving for a while.
That reminded me when I got married, a friend lend me his VW pointer and I topped it at 180kph and it was shaking like hell, I thought it was going to break apart...
Then 2 years ago in vacation I rented a Hyundai atos (distributed by Dodge here in Mexico) it is a micro car with a 1.1l the top speed in a flat road was 85kph, I got it to 90kph downhill, but it felt really bad :p

Trust Z on this one. I am stationed in Germany and ride the Autobahn all the time in my BMW. I have seen so many Americans that think they can go fast in their cars just b/c its the Autobahn and they blow tires b/c the ones they have overheat or cannot handle the speeds. As far as the max, not sure yet my car hasnt been delivered but hopefully it flies
R avenger T 07-29-2009, 03:34 PM Hi Avenger Nuts, I guess it comes from experience of been there done that but, I am more interested in getting those precious mpg's now. My last trip I hit 5700 miles got 32 mpg at 71 mph average. Made me smile as I passed each station. Just be safe, and courteous or I'm afraid we all may lose in the end! Thanks for the great forum.

R avenger T 07-29-2009, 03:48 PM Thanks for asking dwkmi, I have the 3.5L R/T
DA08RT 08-13-2009, 09:41 PM I've hit 118 mph twice
I've hit 118 mph twice and can't seem to get mine to hit that 2 extra mph...
I've also raced twice to be honest...it was crazy because both cars happened to be 2008 Nissan Altimas...1 red 1 white hit 105 against red , hit 118 against white
Won both ! Proud and disappointed at myself at the same time...Strange feeling lol
Both races were not expected, as late night driving on the Southern State Parkway on Long Island can be quite a showing!!!
Drive safe and always Leave Yourself some Outs...
3.5 Altimas?
