View Full Version : New custom exhaust 2.4L
whitewolf359 05-15-2008, 08:40 PM Well I stopped by a local custom shop today. They can make a new custom single exhaust with dual exhaust tips for me. I chose the magnaflow muffler and a pair of 3 inch round double walled polished exhaust tips. The exhaust pipes are going to be made as a one piece setup instead of welding segments together.
I stressed to them I dont want any rice or fart sounding sytem. We listened to some sound clips and they know what I am after.
Work gets done next Tuesday and put half the total bill down so they could get started ordering the parts. I really liked the Zoomers setup but I think it will end up being more trouble and more of a cost in the long run. I need to have whatever work I get done the same day as this is my only vehicle I am driving.

It looks nice and clean, once i get a turbo then i will need a tip.
whitewolf359 05-18-2008, 11:53 PM Yes its stainless. Polished should look really nice for the dual tip setup using the factory spots in the bumper. I want to look nice but not hang out past the bumper.

Sphinx 05-19-2008, 09:12 PM Can't wait to see some pictures Whitewolf!
whitewolf359 05-21-2008, 07:45 AM SOme of my parts did not arrive on time We had to reschedule to this Saturday, they are making happen so I can get it done. THey have also agreed to let me hang around and take pictures of what is being done. I have also requested they take the stock exhaust off in a way that would allow me to put it back on if there is ever a need to.
I will try to get picks of them doing the work on the pipe fabrication as well.

Good idea on the stock exhaust. That is exactly what I did. Mine is sitting in my garage right now. I wanted to keep it around just in case I would ever need to go back to stock.
whitewolf359 05-24-2008, 07:17 AM Less then one hour from now....... finally it's going to be at the shop for the work.

WestAust 05-26-2008, 11:29 PM Wolf thanks for the pictures... if you don't mind I would like to steal some of them and take them to my exhaust bloke to get the same or similar mod done. I am worried about the dollars! :(
Man it looks great, and sounds great, I would love to hear it when your actually on the road, that way you can hear what it sounds like when the engine has to work...

1: Stock resonator removed . (all removed parts are saved for future use)
2: Installed in the stock resonators place was a Magnaflow PN 14615 (http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/shopexd.asp?zone=main&id=7171) Six inch round stainless steel polished muffler. Attached photo muffler.jpg shows muffler installed.
3: Stock stainless pipe was used from muffler to the rear crossmember.
Stock pipe is shown in blue and custom pipe is red in pic 1.jpg.
pic 2.jpg shows where the end of the stock exhaust pipe was cut. This is where the new y-pipe starts at.
4: The stock muffler was removed and a custom Y-pipe was made. Shown in
pic 1.jpg and in pic 3.jpg with the tips welded in place.
5: The drivers side tip needed clearance from the bumper and the shop was not comfortable cutting a brand new car's bumper. I cut part of the outlined knockout on the underside of the bumper. My buddy and I then used a heat gun and a 4 inch exhaust pipe to shape the remainder to what was needed.
6: To finish off the system two Vibrant PN 1226 (http://vibrantperformance.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=1021_1034_1056&products_id=86&osCsid=1c2ec95ec18c10e519d5099f61bbf0cb) 3.5 inch round polished double walled stainless steel exhaust tips were welded onto the ends of the new custom y-pipe. Great care was taken to ensure the exaust pipes and tips were even and level. Measurments were taken from spots on the frame rails. They were checked and double checked until I gave the ok to weld them on. Closeup of the polished tip can be seen in polished tip.jpg
Note: All weld joints were painted using aluminized heat paint to prevent any rust from forming. One thing you may want to do differently then what I had done is have the brackets for the tailpipes welded on the innerside of the pipe instead of the outside where it can be seen looking at the car from the side. Nothing major just something I overlooked when the guys were doing the work. We went over everything I was looking for and they were very cool with me and did what I asked.
***********************************************
I am looking for honest comments good or bad and what you may have done differently then this setup. I do think it is a little loud for me but I will give it a chance before making any changes to it.
whitewolf359 05-27-2008, 12:10 AM Are both pipes functional. sounds very nice. Great job.
Yes they are. The car is surprisingly quiet at an idle but that all changes once the gas is hit. Wonder how this will sound once I have a chance to install my CAI from phrozen?
WestAust 05-27-2008, 12:30 AM OK, i just went to my exhaust guy... he loved what he saw of your car. He has given me a quote of $600AUD for a similar job.
In Australia it's illegal for the exhaust tips to stick out like yours, and I think your are out just a little too far for my liking, so I am going with the oval shaped tips. we are still not sure about the how much to cut on the bumper.
Thanks again and I think it looks and sounds great! nice work!

If you stand at the back of my car and look down the tips do not go past the furthest point of the rear bumper. Trust me I did not want them to stick out far for many different reasons.
The bumper is going to have a template on the side that has no tip. Dont cut the entire template out.
The attched picture eill show in red where to cut. Also circled in blue is the vapor canister/fuel inlet is. This box should be wrapped in reflective heat tape (http://www.heatshieldproducts.com/heat_shield_tape.php)to protect it.
Hope I am being helpful. Good luck!

Take what you like for pics I dont mind. Also youtube videos are being uploaded now with just what you are looking for. Only thing, I dont have anyone to video for me so I can do a drive by (hint to any of you Michigan peeps wanting to help with this one).
So I have windows down and windows up inside the car driving on normal roads and also on the freeway. Should be done in a while. Its 2am here and I need to sleep but probably wont since I need to be up at 5am for work. I know what will happen if I got sleep now. Might make it work by 10 am and thats not good. :4-looney:

josho66 05-27-2008, 07:24 AM Very nice looking exhaust Whitewolf. That was what I was looking at doing first but I didn't think I would be able to do the duals, didn't know how to cut out the part on the left side of the bumper. I just went with the single muffler setup.

Also I noticed you have a reverse camera... how did you install it and are how are you using it with the mygig (if you are???)???

Also I noticed you have a reverse camera... how did you install it and are how are you using it with the mygig (if you are???)???
Mounted the camera to the underside of the the lip of the bumper. Removed the bumper cover pins from top side of the bumper in the trunklid area. Ran the cables thru the reverse light area. There is space to run it. REmoved the weatherstrip from the bottom side of the trunk ran the cable thru there and replaced weatherstrip.
The camer is hooked to the MYGIG. At first I had the standard MYGIG without the NAV. I upgraded that this past week to the NAV unit. I use the lockpick with the additional multimedia cable harness. Check here: http://www.coastaletech.com/MYGIG.htm
The camera power is wired to the accessory power line supplied with that harness.
I see what you mean about the rear foglights on yours Never seen that before now but it isnt bad either. I installed the camera because of the rear windows being so dark I needed it to be able to back into my driveway at night that has no lighting.

Your right about the rear fogs Westaust, the rear of car would look much cleaner without them. The dealer told me the Avenger complies with euro rules/laws!
WestAust 05-27-2008, 04:19 PM I got a similar response!
Quiet Lunatic 05-27-2008, 04:19 PM Whitewolf great photos and videos good effort put in, glad your happy with the exhaust. Rep coming!
Sphinx 05-27-2008, 04:27 PM Whitewolf, I like the way your exhaust looks! I really like the tips on there. I will have to wait until I get home to listen to it. I am sure it sounds great, but I need ideas for what I want to do when the time comes.

I thought about the oval tips. We even tried putting them against the car and looking. I wasnt to sure about it. Now if the rear bumper was cut out to fit them I think it would look ok. I also thought if the rear bumper had more of a cutout for the round tips I have it would look nicer then it does now.
Lots of ideas some just not cost effective.
I love my car. I am not one for a bunch of chrome and trying to make it look flashy. Now when I was younger that was a different story. Now a days I like to stay under the radar if possible..
jburke01rt 05-28-2008, 02:04 PM have u noticed any mpg and performance difference?. im goin to do a similar setup.
whitewolf359 05-28-2008, 02:28 PM have u noticed any mpg and performance difference?. im goin to do a similar setup.
MPG maybe a little but my engine is still real new yet so I am not sure.
performance it does seem to have a little more power now. Since this has been installed I have noticed when coming to a stop the downshifts of the transmission are more noticeable. Not sure why.
whitewolf359 05-30-2008, 01:39 PM I think I am going to try to finder a quieter muffler then the current one or something to quiet the system down a bit. I like the sound but Ive been trying to get used to it and its to loud for me. Do you think a added in resonator would help or have another suggestion?

If you took out the stock one and it is that loud then I would say try and put it back in. That would be where I would start first.

West buddy you will be happy, only thing you need to tell your exhaust guy is to be careful when making the y-pipe be sure to cut a large enough hole into the pipe to complete the y-pipe. I will dig up the pic of what im talking about in a few.
@ DEATH - thanx that made me laugh this morning. I would hope it dosent sound like a ricer because it certainly dosent eat rice. :hah:
whitewolf359 06-03-2008, 07:43 AM West I hope this pic helps you.
My setup used the original pipe from the front of the car. What they did was cut a hole in the side of that pipe to make the first part of the y connection. If this hole is not large enough it wont allow the flow of the exhaust through properly. My recommendation is to purchase the y adaptor to make sure it's correct.
Mine wasnt done properly but will be fixed later this week.

I can respect that. I am working on making some changes to my setup.
I saved the original exhaust components just in case.
Bender 06-05-2008, 09:38 PM did you notice any change in power?
whitewolf359 06-07-2008, 07:52 AM did you notice any change in power?
Yes I did. Due to the way the y-pipe was made there was an issue with a wturbo like sound at high RPM. When they built the ypipe they didnt make the hole to the second pipe big enough. This has since been corrected and I must say it's alot nicer now. More details later, I get to play truck driver and mover today for mom.

I thought that was the fuel tank!
I thought the same thing, it sticks out like a sore thumb.
Thanks for the great info, you gave us some ideas. Would you mind giving an estimate price, just to know what I am getting into.
whitewolf359 06-09-2008, 01:11 AM The original exhaust work listed in the beginning of this topic was $700. However I found the tailpipes had a defect with how they were made.
I have removed those and went with a new design as well as a new hushpower muffler.
Revised system was done by MIDAS.
Their labor and parts came to $200 and the muffler was $139 from summit.
So the magnaflow exhaust I just put on was removed and redone.
More on this later it has been a very long weekend for me. Helped mom to move, off to bed now.
infearandfaith 06-10-2008, 09:27 PM haha white wolf your awesome for two reasons
1st, you took all these pictures specifically just to help others, which is sweet. rep up. i appreciate it.
2nd, and thus more important - you have a transformers sticker above your mygig. You are the man for that haha. Where did you even get that?
anyway so your telling us that right after you got all that work done you noticed a bunch of defects, and had the entire thing redone?
thats insane, how much did the first time cost? im thinking about copying you

Well thank you for the compliments.
Transformers sticker was actually from a child greeting card. There was about 12 in total in different sizes. Not sure what I done woth the rest though. I have other transformers items such as vehicle emblems that will be placed in the car in time.
Exhaust work first time around cost me $700. streetlegalcustoms.com took the money for the job and ordered the parts and after taking my car there they farmed the work to another shop. I didnt so much mind that but what irked me was what they paid this other shop to do my work was way less then I paid them to do it. I understand everyone deserves to make money but my parts total they ordered was $280 if I remember correctly. THe other shop charged them $225 for the work. So they made $200 for ordering me the exhaust tips and the muffler. Also thye made profit on the parts they ordered i just dont know exact figures there possibly $100 bucks.
Theoriginal quoted price was $811 with tax. I complained about them sending me somewhere else to have the work done and thye lowered the price to $700.
This was a learning experience for me and hopefully prevents others from making the same mistake.
The new exhaust work was done by Midas at 12 mile road and John R in Madison Heights Michigan. Their work was top notch. Their original estimate was 2 hours of labor for a total of $192. It took them almost 4 hours total because the guy doing the work heard what my past experience was and he was a perfectionist. They charged me the quoted price even though it took almost twice as long.
While the guys were doing this on an extremely hot day I thought hey why not offer to run to the store and get them something cold to drink. They did appreciate that one.
New exhaust with overnight shipping of the Hushpower muffler from Summit was $371. I must say it sounds alot better.:smiley_thumbs_up:

Inspector722 06-11-2008, 09:09 PM On your Hushpower mufflers, did the 2.5" inlet slip on tight or did they have to swell the end of the factory pipe to fit it right.

First off welcome to the forum. THe factory pipe was removed at the end of the cat.
We tried to use as much of the same size pipe as possible. The factory resonator was removed in the original exhaust mod. THe new muffler is in place of the factory resonator. I wish I would have left it on there but how much quieter could it have made it who knows.
I've looked through youtube and so far no one else has done this yet with the hushpower muffler.
whitewolf359 06-11-2008, 11:26 PM While getting this work done there was a guy there getting his Infiniti G35 air serviced. He commented on how nice my car was and he wanted to know more about it and what I was doing to it. Turns out he has a large car collection and his G35 was a daily driver. He was trying to stick around long enough to hear my car with the new exhaust. But he had to leave and didnt get a chance to hear it.
Went through the drive thru at Buger King today and the older gentlemen working the register asked if the car was a gas guzzler. I replied no and he asked if it was a 6 cylinder. Told him no and he mentioned he loved how the car purred. I thanked him and told him it will roar when needed to. He got yelled at for spending to much time talking to me and he mistakenly gave me to much money back in change and I made sure he got it back.
Drove by several cops today and they all were looking at the car but didnt bother me. thankfully.

Do you think the resonator is going to make a lot of difference?
I am only guessing :4-dontknow: but I would have to say that it should other wise why would it be in there in the first place?
I think I will use the Hushpower Muffler with the resonator to start and then see how it sounds...
I will get Kev from Cannington Performance to have a go at it for me. <-- WA readers Kev has been a big help with this thus far and has visited the forums. I have found everyone at Cannington Performance to be help full and supportive.
whitewolf359 06-12-2008, 12:10 AM Not enough to worry about. It is after all a straight thru design.
Also painting the tailpipes flat back on my car made a world of difference in the looks department. It made it look more stock. THe guy at Firestone who was replaceing my right rear tire put down on my invoice that it was an Avenger R/T just because of the looks and sound of the exhaust. I told him he was mistaken and he was shocked to find out it was only a 4cylinder.

Thank you for the kind words. I hope all of this helps someone out there in making decisions on some possible different setups.
