View Full Version : New to this... Any easy mods?

Hey guy's I've never done any mod's and don't know much about it either. I would like to get better acceleration, and I was wondering if there were any fairly simple mod's a newbie like me could do. Even something that would be more difficult that I could look into doing down the road would be fine too. I read some of the messages in this forum, but wasn't sure where a good place to start is. Any help?

By the way I have an SXT 2.7

There are many quality threads already started that have the information in them that you seek! None the less... some easy mods may be as simple as the good old radiator cap mod... or grille insert mod... or new wheels... etc. Did you ever post any pictures of your car?

Ya I posted them in my newbie check in thread, but here they are again:

I would recomend going through the "photo" section of the forumz...you can see what others have done and get a sense for what you might want to do. also you can PM any one of them and I am sure they would be happy to help you out. Goodluck on your car. Any questions just PM me.

I would get the windows tinted and add an "eyebro" a tint stripe at the top of the windshield. It drops the profile of the window and also helps with the glare that can come off of your dash.

Sounds like some good idea, thanks Bill. I would like to get the windows tinted, but I know New York has some kind of tint limit/law, and the cops around here do enforce it. I'm not sure what the tint limit/law is do you know how I could find out? Also what kind of shop would I need to take the car to, to get it tinted?

Get a new intake. I think there is one available, or one coming soon. Should give you a little better accerleration and throttle response. You could get a Jet chip, but some members aren't sure they do much. I would research that one first. Exhaust is another option. Those are some of the most basic and cheapest mods for performance to start with.

Performance mods, i agree with Markio get the exhaust done, and get CAI until the manifold is available. That would allow your engine to breath way better without those factory restriction.

Then wait...and wait some more for a programmer/tuner to come out for our cars. This gives you a very noticeable performance gain, and works great in conjunction with the other mods.

Thanks so much for the tips guys! I was looking at that jet chip but wasn't to sure on whether or not to get it. After reading what you said markio I think it's best to wait yet. I think I will look into getting the exhaust, and CAI done. Is that something I could have the dealer do (I've been taking my cars to them to be worked on for the past few years, and don't know of any other good shops)? And those things don't void the warranty right? Also where should I buy those pieces from (internet, ordered at a shop, etc)?

Sorry for all the questions, but I'm excited about doing some mod's to my car, and want to do it right.

I would say that the exhaust is a must. I went with a Magnaflow muffler and love it. Great sound and looks way better then the stock one. I am going to add a CAI sometime and hopefully then I will see a difference in the power.

The dealer doesn't offer a CAI yet, and I am not sure if they would or could do the exhaust either. Your best bet on the exhaust is to take it to a local reputable exhaust shop and have them take a look and see what they can do. Should be able to stick a Magnaflow or similiar in the space near the middle of the car where the resonator sits now. For an intake, you should just do it yourself for the install. It is actually very easy.

I added new fusion spark plugs they work very well.

i agree the cai and exhaust cat back would do the trick for not much money. or start chipping it or boost.

Thanks again for the help guys. I'll look into shops on where to get that done. I was talking with one of my friends last night, and he said that in order to get the performance out of your car after adding the mods, the computer in the engine would have to be adjusted to the new parts. He said right now it's set for the stock parts, and if I added anything else the computer would adjust to the new parts to make it get the same performance as the stock parts. Any truth to that?

Yes there is. Anytime you add one of these mods disconnect the negative battery cable for 20-30 minutes and hook it back up. It resets the computer and it adapts to the new mods. If not, over time it would adjust for them on it's own, this just speeds it up.

When installing any performance part, you should unplug the (-) side of the battery for at least 30min to reset your cars computer. I try and do it over night, but that's me. now your cars computer will sense the new parts and make adjustments, just don't drive your car like a granny or your computer will adjust for economy and not performance.

So when I add my CAI I should do that?? I didn't realize you should do that even with small mods.

OK I've seen this a lot and read about it a bit. If you have done it, what cap did you use?

same here. any mod for increased air flow or unrestricted exhaust changes the fuel mix. to ensure you are getting the most out of your mods you should always disconnect the neg at the batt and let the "MAPS" drop out. When the ECM senses these changes it will adjust fuel accordingly.

Whats a good length of time to disconnect the battery??

I would say 30 MIN minimum, I always do it over night, but thats me.

Thanks. I will have to do that when I add my CAI. I didn't do it after the exhaust. Wonder if I would notice much of a difference if I did. I will for sure do it after the CAI so it can adjust to both of the mods.

I noticed a different after rebooting mine, i drove about 2000 miles before i restarted my ECU.

If all that isn't in your budget an air freshener tree will have to do.:ura1: You have a very nice car.
