View Full Version : What do you think about the Autostick Feature?

When I first saw advertising for this I thought that looks pretty cool, but is it really necessary. I soon found that it is fun to use and does allow you quicker starts off the line. I later found that it is actually very usful for me. I live in the Catskills and driving up mountains in automatic resulted in alot of up and downshifting to maintain a constanst speed. With A/S this is eliminated. Great Feature and using it more and more.

I wish I had the auto stick feature... but I have the 2.4, so no auto stick. I am use to owning manual trans, so this auto is kinda boring to me...

I live in the mountains too and my favorite part is locking it in a lower gear and avoiding the brakes.

I as well have the 2.4, and being they decided to go with the 4 speed transmission, I am constantly waiting for the next shift. There are a couple of places where I shift down into the next gear before leaving the stop light due to a prolonged uphill grade. I try and avoid constantly shifting gears, but I finds the car gets stuck in a high rev for several seconds while waiting for the next gear change.

If the next generation of Avenger uses the same engine, they really should either use the 6 speed on all the cars or offer the Auto Stick on all the Avengers. I am really hoping that a programmer comes out that which will allow me to adjust my shift points.

When I bought my Avenger I drove the R/T and really liked the Auto Stick, but due to this being my commuter car of over 40 miles round trip, I opted for the 2.4l. I asked the salesman if the Auto Stick was an option I could get on the 2.4l and he said it was part of the SXT upgrade.
Well I got the car and drove it home. I went about 10 miles and encountered a large hill and went to use my AutoStick, only to realize, there is no AutoStick. :4-dontknow: Well I was a little upset! It was the next day when I was able to get to the dealer and I started asking why the AutoStick upgrade was not installed. I got some very confused looks by the tech department, sales guy and several managers. Well come to find out the sales guy was misinformed and there is no upgrade for the 2.4l, boy was he embarresed. :doh:I was really close to handing back the keys, but he offered me an upgrade in my service contract so I was pacified, not happy but pacified.

Honestly? I need to learn how to use the darn thing!
Grew up driving manual transmissions (wish I could get the Avenger in a 6 spd. manual!), but this AS has me a bit confused, no matter how much I research it!

I wish I had it as well. But I have been dropping it into 3 when in city driving. The second to first down shift is a little firmer, and less downshifting when accelerating form a slow steady speed.
For real fun, leave it in low. It will upshift on it's own at redline to prevent over-revving, and talk about engine breaking....

It's true you have to watch the sale guys. One told me mine had YES seats and I knew I didn't because it said it didn't on the paper on the car. He was seeing the airbag tag instead.

I wish more salesmen would become more knowledgeable. It makes the rest of us look bad!!!

Its a sports shift option for the auto in the higher priced Avenger, you can manual hold/change gears a bit like a manual but with no clutch.

The closest we get to AutoStick is that the shifter can move sideways.:4-dontknow:

The PT GT with a ATX has AutoStick and that is the same transmission as ours.
I wonder if this can be added somehow?

AutoStick is only available in the 6speed transmission backed 3.5L R/T in the Avenger line.I am sure it is supposed to be a spinoff from the ole slapstick shifter they used to have back in the earlier performance Mopars. Used for Clutchless Manual Shifting...translation.....Pure Fun.
dwkmi-- you saying there is a pressure valve that upshifts to keep it from redlining? thats friggin badass...jaguar XJS v-12's backed with TH400 GM transmissions could go up to 7000rpm and literally lift the front end off the pavement and break the rear tires loose...Thats a helluva ride....

I haven't used mine a whole lot yet, but I find it's nice to roll along in 2nd gear in heavy traffic instead of dealing with the constant up and down shifting if I leave it up to the car. Seems a little jerky, and I dunno if it's normal....haven't used an auto in years.

I use it always. Great for performance but also ecomomy. I can practically idle at city speed when it's in 6th gear. Also great for winter, I sometimes start from a stop in 2nd so I don't spin the wheels and also for slowing down without the brakes.

Im definitly not sure what the auto stick is but my 2.7 has these numbers on the shift are that says 3 and L. what the heck is L?

My R/T AWD has the six speed trans with the auto stick. I'm still getting used to it. My last car was an 03' G35 Coupe with a six speed man. trans. The 1-2sec delay with the auto stick, I'm finding is trick to adapt to. I'm use to instant shifts, but it's still fun letting it hit darn near redline and hearing that exhaust scream. :-)

I LOVE it. I mainly use it in the winter to help control the speed better. Oh, and when I'm dusting Hondas and V6 Mustangs. haha

I like playing around with it once in awhile, but not really necessary here in the prairies. (No hills)

not necessary in prairies??? That is mother nature's dragstrip. I get the r/t to myself and I drop that puppy right into the autostick mode. The lag in shift is something you can eliminate by paying close attention to the rpms. You get them wound up nice and tight and it will shift as fast as you can slap it to the right.

After having owned this thing for a few months now, a new opinion. For me, it's mostly useless but kinda fun. Fast takeoffs. Also, very very good in heavy bumper-to-bumper highway traffic. I leave it in second and just roll. Probably less efficient than auto, but not having the constant up and down shift from 1 to 3 is nice in terms of ride comfort.

I commute with a girl who owns a Yaris and she's always amused b the Avenger's ability to snap her head back into the headrest ;) Can't wait to give her a workout in the snow!

Edit - the car, I mean.

I wish my Avenger could impress girls with a Yaris. :( Out here your car has to be uber expensive luxury (E Class is entry level) or a Prius. You can't even raise an eybrow with a King of the Road Mustang.

I love it. It is at its best in 4th gear. I have burnt a few cars racing using this feature.

My car is a SX but you call it a SE but the Australian model has the auto-shift fog lights and so on I can drive it as a sports car and your front and rear fascias don't fit on the Australian cars so the overseas cars are a bite different.

I think it's okay... It has a bit of a lag and I don't understand how your supposed shift down through 6 gears without a clutch
