View Full Version : dwkmi's HID Install
Quiet Lunatic 06-11-2008, 06:43 PM Got my kit today.
I started by finding a location to mount the ballast brackets. Once that was done and the ballasts were installed, it went fairly quick.
I went with the 55w kit and didn't use the harness... turned them on and no flicker... but no lights either.
So I added the harness/relay, which only took another 5 or 10 minutes, and now have HIDs.
It is also a 50w, not 55w.
First batch of pics - it won't be dark for another hour. More pics then.
The last pic shows that it isn't blinding to look at - at least not till you move lower. Of course this was during daylight.
Chrismust 06-11-2008, 07:52 PM Looks good, and I like the captions on the pics. Also thanks for mentioning about the harness..

Great job, Glad to see you got your lights in. I can't wait till it gets dark so i can test mine more.
Quiet Lunatic 06-11-2008, 09:45 PM Ok. So here's the first pics at night.
It has "u" shapes - I guess I never paid attention to the stock lights to see if they are the same.
There is a good cutoff though - I marked it in the pics.

Once it gets dark enough i will post mine, I took measurements of the stock lights i will post them too.

Great. I wanted to get before pics but never got around to it.
I went for a short drive and passed about dozen cars and no body seemed to mind. I also took a video cam but the video didn't turn out well so I may try again tomorrow night.

Great thats good to know. I will try a video too( great idea). I will post later on tonight.
xflashjr 06-11-2008, 10:42 PM Hey guys!
yall are the very first people with the 50 watt kits! It always takes one to be a tester and I have to say they look phenominal!
as far as the wiring harness goes, if you plug the lights in and you get nothing, try reversing the plug going to the ballast. If not that is why the wiring harness is supplied!
I would love to see a video and intial impressions are also great!

Thanks, I'll give the polarity flip a try. Just so that I understand, is that the low voltage side or high voltage side?
My video cam isn't the best in low light, but I plan on taking another vid anyway. I think a good way for others to experience it, and see the cutoff, is to take a vid from the drivers seat. I'll get one up tomorrow night.
First impression of 6000k HIDs: They are so white they make my high beams look like amber fog lights. lol
I meant to get some pics with the fog/driving lights on but forgot.
xflashjr 06-11-2008, 11:12 PM If you are asking if the low voltage side or high voltage side, because of possible harm there is none if you flip it one way and it does not work flipping it the other will either
1) do nothing
2) turn the lights on
If not without adding any capacitor or computer canceller the 50 watt kits do not flicker. I always recomened using the wiring harness, regardless of wattage as it is added protection for the system!
I can not wait for the video!
Steve
Quiet Lunatic 06-12-2008, 05:03 AM Your doing good for others here, can wait for the video
josho66 06-12-2008, 08:35 AM Yours look amazing also!!!! So now that we know we need to use the harness with the 50w kit, is the only difference between the 35w and 50w kit the extra light output??
xflashjr 06-12-2008, 09:23 AM josh,
it has yet to be tested, the 35 w kit will have to still have a capacitor wired in. I still feel the 55w kit is the safest.
One of the guys stationed in south korea order a 35w kit and we shall see how this goes.

Oh, I like the 50w kit then, like the idea of no capacitor. Other then that though they are very similar as far as install??
xflashjr 06-12-2008, 09:57 AM besides that they are identical as far as install goes.

Thanks Steve, that is what I was looking for.
Quiet Lunatic 06-12-2008, 10:24 AM josho, I'll be switching the connections to reverse polarity to see if the 50w kit works without flicker without the harness. I plan on testing it after work today and will post the results.

That would be nice. As Steve said though I think that the harness is still go to use just to have that added protection.

Well... I unplugged from the harness and reversed the polarity at at lunch, and the lights came on fine. I left them on as I drove to Subway, and then I got out and watched them for a few minutes and I did get the flicker.
So I switched back to the harness.

Thanks for trying that. So it looks like we need the harness with the 50w kit but don't need the capacitor.
Sphinx 06-12-2008, 03:11 PM Those look much better than the stock lights! Thanks for the pictures Dave!

It looks that way. I haven't used the headlights for any drive over 5 minutes yet, but so far so good.
As soon as it starts getting dark I plan on checking the aim of the headlights again. I think they are still right on the mark, but just want to check them.
For anyone interested - Jagerbombz has a great write up on how to align your headlights. http://avengerforumz.com/showthread.php?t=27107

I hope your lights are more aligned then mine were.
estrellitaroja 06-12-2008, 07:09 PM what temperature or colour are they? is a 5000k?

They are 6000k. Very white.
josho66 06-12-2008, 09:20 PM They are 6000k. Very white.
Do you have some good night time pics yet??
Quiet Lunatic 06-12-2008, 09:56 PM It's nearly impossible to get good night time pics. The glare on the camera lens is far more than in person. So much so that I don't really want to post them because they aren't a true view of what they look like. You do get a good view of the color in the daytime shots. http://avengerforumz.com/showpost.php?p=50691&postcount=1
Here is a video at night from the drivers seat. I turned the high beams on and off a few times.
It's poor quality partially because my video cam isn't good in low light, and partially because it's youtube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXqcDA9Dh-k
The funny thing is that I passed one car - at about 45 seconds - that had one light way out of alignment and it looked like a stock halogen, while the driver's side looked like it may have been an HID (much whighter, but adjusted better). Take a look at it.
There is another car at 1:15 that has the headlights aimed too high... and had the driving lights on. And this was obviously stock lights.
The truth is that most people don't even consider, or care, how there lights are adjusted.... while those of us adding HIDs really do care about other drivers and ensure our lights are adjusted properly.
And the best night time pic. Still some camera lens glare , but not too much. Oh, and it's just the headlights, without markers - I used the remote to unlock the doors.
xflashjr 06-12-2008, 10:17 PM looks awesome! I love the music with the video as well!
Jagerbombz 06-13-2008, 02:22 AM Hey,
do you have alot of glare at night, even with a low cutoff point. I have to much glare.
Quiet Lunatic 06-13-2008, 06:41 AM I have mine adjusted about 1 1/2" lower at 25ft to see how it goes. If no one complains via flashing their lights, I'll raise them.
Are you getting flashed or it just looks like glare to you. Remember that a camera or video will always have more glare than in real life due to the lenses. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lens_flare
Standing 25 ft away I can look right at them and and they look fine.
Quiet Lunatic 06-13-2008, 06:46 AM Ah Dwkmi cruisin with you was nice thanks for the vid!
Quiet Lunatic 06-13-2008, 06:51 AM Ah Dwkmi cruisin with you was nice thanks for the vid!
We'll have to do it again sometime. lol
For anyone wondering, the music was Duffy - one of my latest favorite artists.
xflashjr 06-13-2008, 09:18 AM dwkmi,
after looking at the video again, the amount of glare is almost non existence in a real world scenario. the light seems to be about 100-150 feet out which is perfect.
how have them been for the first 2 nights or so?
Quiet Lunatic 06-13-2008, 10:39 AM I only went on a few short drives - just to see them in action. I haven't done any real night time driving. I love them, they give such a white light.
I added more info to the post with the video.

the glare is coming from the sides of the car, and they are as tall as a house. I drove around a neighborhood and i lighted the house, and when i passed cars on the freeway i lighted up there cars when i drove by.
josho66 06-13-2008, 11:57 AM Thanks for the night time pics and video, it looks really nice. I can't wait to see the others that have been ordered. I think someone got the 10000k, I want to see what those look like before I order.

Of course it lights up those things, but it isn't the "hot spot" of the light. See this post in your HID thread - I explained it there just a minute ago :) http://avengerforumz.com/showpost.php?p=51164&postcount=36
Revenger08 06-19-2008, 10:42 PM Guys....
Did my install last night on my 35w kit... Kinda of a pain in the rear w/ the install, but man, what a difference in the light intesity and brightness of the light...I'll try to post some pics if I can get a chance....Now I am the only person in Korea with a HID equipped Avenger. There are only three avengers in the whole country..
xflashjr 06-23-2008, 11:58 AM I can not wait for pictures!
slacksxt 04-23-2009, 02:44 PM So what I get from this is that as a general consensus the HID's will work and not annoy other drivers too much without the projector retro fit. This is a huge boost for me as I was contenplating the amount of work that needed to be done for the whole thing. Xflashjr did offer his services for the retro fit but now with this info I dont think it is needed.
Xflashjr are the HID kits you sell different from the other kits on the market? Are they particular to avengers or does it matter?
And what is the brightest/most powerful kit and colour available?

I (meaning on-coming drivers) have had no issues with the light output.
You may want to ask Xflashjr that question in his forum where he is more likely to see it. http://www.avengerforumz.com/forumdisplay.php?f=64
patman1386 06-29-2009, 07:17 AM Dave,
do you not have any flickering problems with your HIDs? I just got the 35W kit installed and now have the same flickering lights problem that everyone else has.
Do I need to get a relay harness or canceller to solve this problem?

Is your flickering both or one bulb?
I have had a flicker problem on the RHS bulb, flickered every 2 1/5 min. My kit came with a relay and harness. Capacitor didn't fix it. I finally replaced the bulbs, and so far its cool.
Quiet Lunatic 06-30-2009, 05:02 PM About every 10 to 20 minutes at least one will go off for a fraction of a second and come back on. I don't often drive at night, so it isn't a big deal... at least not enough for me to bother to fix it.
