View Full Version : I blacked my rims

So a couple weeks ago i pondered on painting my rims with a black incert and leave the shiney chrome.. well.. chrome. So i took pictures and good ol` photoshop did the rest. I sat there looking at the screen.. everything was prepped in the garage to start the sanding, etc. But i couldnt get the balls to do it. Finally i said screw it... and ran downstairs .. grabbed the sand paper ... and made a scratch on the chrome. So no way in turning back from there... cant let a nice chrome be scratched up. Well, this is what i came up with:

At the back of the car with the rims & no emblems / smoked tail lights:

Looks awesome at night time.

I actually got the idea from the superbee charger (blue one) with the black/chrome rims.

It takes some time and ALOT of prep. I used duplicolor for the main color (black) but had primer also.

The trick was to first mask off the tire to where you dont want to paint, regular 2" scotch tape works. Then with 240 rated sandpaper to scuff the chrome properly. Then put 2 layers of primer on. It was a hot day so it dried fairly quick. After that I put just shy of 3 layers of black duplicolor. They only come in mainly flat black, but of course you can use a clearcoat if you'd like.

It was like opening a present, I didnt know what to really expect. But it turned out great. :) Trust me, alot cheaper then buying new rims. Cost only 50$ for everything. And 2 days of work.

Kudos for you! What a rush that must have been to run down and hit the rim with the sandingpaper! Like looking out of the plane with your parachute on for the first time and talking to yourself "I'm gonna do it! I'm gonna do it!". Once you are over the edge, there is no way back.

Awsome They look like custom rims. :smiley_thumbs_up: My big concern would be the paint fading and chipping, lets hope the clear coat holds. Let us know how that holds up.
I don't think I would trust myself, great idea and execution.

I actually never used clear coat.. the paint i used is made for rims to be completely honest. They actually have more protection against break dust & rock chips. Like i said, its Duplicolor.. and it comes in multiple colors you can get. With silver it would look awesome with a charcoal color or something to that. It only takes about a full day to do it all. But the biggest thing is the sanding/primer. After that, because the wheel is masked off you just have to layer the black paint. The one thing i like about my car is i never put alot of money into it, its all stock.. the tail lights is a translucent paint i got at a auto store and its similiar to spraypaint. There is no aftermarket work into it at all really.

I did that on my old Grand Am in red to match the car, got a lot of compliments on it...thought about it on my Avenger, but decided against it, too much work for me...lol. Looks great though.

Thanks guys, the one thing i noticed about black is dirt sure stays on it good ;) Takes a bit longer to clean the rims now.. well sorta. The black just needs a good scrubbin

So a quick update.... no real change.. hasnt really faded.. just catches the regular dirt.. but does great against break dust. Thought i would let you guys know.

Nothing wrong at all with them. One thing I do want to say is.. make sure you do a good job sanding before adding the primer on.. then the paint. Everything worked out amazing... nothing but compliments. I actually had a car race to just ask me what my car was .. cause i de-badged it

looks nice Avery, i guess it wouldn't be too hard to touch them up in the future if they get chipped and flake either

Thanks guys, i've noticed that dirt is really attracted to it.. this weekend I'm going to see if I can use maybe WD40 and shine up the blackness and bring back the original color.

Avery

You may want to test out the paint first, that color would be quite hard to find..I am sure black would look pretty sharp as well

sorry to bring back an old thread, but I absoleutly love this idea. I saw this when you first posted it but I was just planning on purchasing new rims for the car and then I remembered that you did this. It looks awesome, I just couldn't find any rims that I thoroughly enjoyed on this car, but these are it.

I will be doing this in the next couple weeks. :)

This looks awesome! I was just about to take my 18"s to a powder coat place and do the exact same color scheme on mine. Then decided to go by Caliber 19" 5spoke wheels instead.

Rep coming.
