View Full Version : Acceleration delay...

ive been really noticing a delay lately between the time i floor the pedal, and when my avenger goes. im wondering if this is a normal thing or not. my bosses truck (a ford) was doing the same sort of thing, he took it in and three injectors where bad. so tell me this, if you guys floor the pedal and release it right away, does your car rev up for a split second? mine does nothing.

We have fly-by wire throttle-body meaning no accelerator cable if you stab the accelerator pedal and then lift it wont read anything, of course depending on how quick you do this and how long the pedal is to the metal

As wogboy said, we have fly-by-wire. So the pedal is connected to the computer, and then the computer decides how far to open the throttle depending on many things, like whether you are stopped, how fast you are going, what gear you are in, etc.

yeah... i knew we where fly by wire... i just wasnt sure if it was so slow to respond

there is a manualk re-calibration procedure to cure this I found it on the caliber forums. 1 Turn your key on but do not start the car.
2 wait for all of your engine lights to cycle.
3 slowly depress your accelerator pedal taking 15 seconds to go down and 15 seconds to return.
4 shut ignition off and wait 5-10 minutes.
5 start car and drive. I tryed this and it worked......i would mash the pedal and had horrible lag. I re-calibrated the pedal and no more lag. Good luck and I hoped this helped. !!!

does it have to be an exact 15 seconds?

Loosenuts
08-03-2008, 12:48 PM
as far as I know it has to be 15 down and 15 up. I beleave the TPS on the caliber is the same as on the avenger. I followed the directions as they had stated them and it worked for me.

The lag also depends on certain variables. At a dead stop, there's a bit of a lag. At, say 50mph, there is no noticeable lag.

i get lag no matter what speed i am going, i would say near a second and a half.. im gonna go try this recal right now, ill let you guys know how it works out

:EDIT:

tried it and worked instantly. here is what i did

1. turned on ignition(did not start engine) and waited till lights went out
2. pressed throttle in slowly and held down for 15 seconds, then released it slowly
3. shut off the ignition

started the car right away and tried it, no lag!! YAY!!

Loosenuts, you are my freakin hero, I've lost to mini-ricers because of the lag. Can't wait to do a 0-60 with this. REP!!!

Alright just got back from testing it. After taking the delay off and resetting the ECU, I got about 6 seconds (count's probly not too acurate). Before this it took me 10 seconds or so to reach 60, I also noticed my tires squeel a lot longer but it's not like I could burnout on that road (nothing gets the cops on you faster than a burnout). EDIT: I was a little disappointed considering my goal was 5 seconds or less, although the only engine mod I have is the CAI lol.

I noticed the lag once I installed my CAI......I think the increase in air intake throws off the TPS I would recomend any one with lag to try this mod. Glad I could help out.

Has anyone tried this for the RT and also, does this affect gas mileage?

Loosenuts
08-04-2008, 01:18 PM
It works for all chrysler TPS ....should not affect milage you are just re-calibrating it.

Bender
08-04-2008, 09:59 PM
yeah about that recalibration thing.. i got to thinking what would happen if you didnt depress the pedal all the way while recalibrating it, my thought on this would be less stroke making the throttle a lil more responsive... im gonna try this in the morning and tell you guys what i find

I am going to try it on my Diesel. You never know, it might help, I get a lag too...

This actually works!! I did this adjustment the other day, and the car is now more responsive... I may even be able to spin the tires in the rain now!! I use to not even be able to spin them on ice, but there is hope now!

We probably should make these instructions into a 'sticky' post? Great info to have handy!

I notice a good difference on the Diesel too? Or is that what I want to believe?
Anyway, I get the impression that my CRD is responding better to the pedal now!

Great thing!

I have BOTH an Avenger and a Caliber. I'm gonna try this and see and I hope this works (even a little bit). Huge kisses coming your way if it does. Ya, I'm a guy and I'm not really fond of kisses but I figured if this works you oughtta get something!!

I've tried this twice but I've seen no notable results...

Does it have to be exactly 15 seconds, up and down?

Also, is it still working for everyone who has successfully accomplished this method?

Quiet Lunatic

I have done it, I just waited for the dash lamps to cycle off. That is a sure way to know the system has cycled and all temp and air sensors have set.

This was brought right about the time I got my car and it works great. It seems the car likes to recalibrate itself though so every month or so I do this trick and it is great. Another trick to try is to unplug the battery for several hours. This allows the computer to reset, which is important after a new mod.

Moderators: Please make this an entry in the knowledge base.

1. turn on ignition to ACC position (do not start engine) and wait until all warning lights turn off
2. press accelerator pedal in slowly (over appx 15 seconds)
3. hold down for 15 seconds
4. releas accelerator pedal slowly (over appx. 15 seconds)
5. shut off the ignition

Some have stated you should let the car sit for "5-10 minutes". Others have said that the started the car right away.

After this procedure you should have no noticeable response in throttle.

I know that's not what you meant to write, right?

But I thought answering a question started as a new thread without referencing the original thread would be best answered in the thrid person.

Kinda like "Ignore that man behind the curtain".

I notice that step #3 - hold down for 15 seconds - seems to be new. Before it was push down for 15 seconds and then release for 15 seconds. Does the holding it down for 15 seconds really do anything?
