I normal use only two brands in my vehicles from reading oil analysis reports although any SM rated motor oil is sufficient for normal use. I have listed the major brands for our members to vote on to help the members that are trying to decide what might be best for them also. You can vote for more then one oil in this poll.

well i haven't actually changed my own oil yet, but now i am getting the that stage i just would like to save as much as possible. have been taking it to dealer so they can keep updating the book for warrenty reasons, but going to start doing my own as soon as i buy a house in the next couple months, anyway getting back on track. i know the dealer advertises mobil 1, so i am guessing that is what they have been using, but when i start i plan on using mobile 1 as my first choice and valvoline as my 2nd, so that being said, i voted for mobile

Most of the time, the choice of which oil to go with is based on a few factors. The first is syn or dino oil. Once that is decided, then it is up to the owner to decide on which intervals they will use between changes. Then lastly it is to find which brands fit and how much you want to spend.

This is why Mobil1 wins for me. It works well for 5k intervals and is pretty cheap at Wally-Mart.

I do agree thou, Amsoil is probably better but the price is a bit more then the Mobil1, the same goes for the Royal Purple.

Now, if you are going to keep the oil for 10k or maybe the advertised 25k from Amsoil, I would defiently splurge a little on price to get a longer lasting oil.

I voted for and have used Mobil 1 synthetic oil and filters in all my vehicles. I just recently switched over to mobil 1 synthetic in my Jeep Cherokee and it did away with the knocking noise I had at first start-up. I have also heard good things about Royal Purple and may give that a try if I can get my local auto parts store to carry 5w-20.

I'm not sure what the dealer is putting in... I guess mopar, I get my oil changes in the dealership as the lifetime warranty statement says that I need to if I want the warranty.
I will ask my service rep if I can bring my oil.

When I went to the dealership to get the steering wheel audio controls activated I saw that they have mobil 1 syn. I'll ask the price difference for the next oil change.

I don't know if it is a Mexico thing or not. I go to the dealer for the warranty too. But I think they said I have the option of doing it myself. I just value the lifetime warranty over saving money on oil changes.

RTz: As long as you know what you are doing, doing your own oil changes is fine. Just make sure you record in your records when you performed the service and keep the receipts for the oil and filters for proof. Doing this will not void your warranty. This thou does mainly apply to the USA since Mexico and Austraila and other foreign nations have different rules.

They stamp and sign my owner booklet in every service, so they say that if a stamp is missing I'm in trouble. So for the moment I rather keep getting ripped off at the dealership for services and not for a tranny or engine problem...

Does it have to be a dealer stamp or what? Does independent shops have their own stamps? Can you stamp it yourself and sign it yourself and be good to go?

PennZoil has formulated a new motor oil called Ultra. This motor oil already meets some of the new GF-5 guidelines for engine protection that is to go in effect next year. This is the motor oil I will start to use on my next oil change.

I use Royal Purple in the Avenger and Valvoline in the Tahoe. A word of warning for those using Quaker State. I don't know how it is now (not gonna take a chance) but it used to gunk up inside the engine. I've pulled valve covers off on cars that had nothing but Quaker State used in them and the inside of the valve cover had gobs of creamy white gunk, almost like white lithium grease, inside of them. There was one that the valve cover was packed full of this stuff. I would hate to see the rest of the engine.

Motor oils formulated today that API SM and GF-4 are so good even the lowest price ones are good. If they are changed on a regular schedule and not used longer then designed for they will do well in any non-forced air engine.

You guys are hardcore if you're using Royal Purple, lol. I figure full synthetic Quaker State is good enough for me.

So what the heck is the difference between Ultra and Ultra-Euro?

The Euro is certified for user in Maserati's but the plain Ultra isn't.

I have used four different full-synthetics in My R/T.

Valvoline Platinum (with Mobil-1 synthetic filter)

Mobil-1 Synthetic (with Mobil-1 Synthetic)

Castrol Syntec (with FRAM Tough Guard Synthetic filter)

Amsoil (with Generic Synthetic filter)

SO far, I think I like the Platinum the best. I have thought of using Royal Purple.

Couldn't pass up the Syntec. $23.00 for 5 quarts with the Fram filter from O'Reilleys about 3 weeks ago.

So basically Quaker State Oil = Quaker Oatmeal in your valves:3-smash: lol. (For those who know what Quaker oatmeal is.)

Hmmm, I haven't heard anything bad about Quaker State before, but I may have to go with a different oil when it comes time for the next change. Good to get a heads up.

I notice a lot of people using Mobil and I had heard similar things about them before...any one care to chime in?

I use Mobil-1 0w-20 with either a Mobil-1 filter or K&N filter. Saw a big improvement on performance with that alone, better than an intake upgrade.

As far as Quaker State, I have seen the same gunk as mentioned. Not quite sure which of Quaker States oil it is (Regular or Synthetic). Looks like a paste and collects on the inside of the cover, from being slung up there and cooling. From what my buddy says, he looked into it and its wax. It acts like a good lubricate, until it starts building up. Similar to that Bee additive they sell at numerous stores, basically just wax. I certainly wont ever run that crap.

Using Royal Purple, is like, well, using a 50 shot of NOS. I mean this stuff works!

Really? Wow, I know they promise an increase in horsepower, but I'm surprised it is so noticable.

I had planned to start using Royal Purple in my other car after I rebuild the engine, but I also plan to be making 500hp. I didn't really think Royal Purple would be worth the price unless you were putting out a lot power and ran your engine hard.

I guess I need to rethink what oil I'm using!:wow:

Its due to the oil base. In the USA oil that is Group III (mineral base) can be advertised as a synthetic. Across the pond synthetic oil has to be a real synthetic Group IV or V. Royal Purple and Amsoil ASM ares a Group IV and Redline and RLI are Group V. Rest of the full synthetic oils here are blends of Group III and IV in different ratios. Motor oils advertised as synthetic blends are usually Group II with some Group III blended in.

Nothing but Amsoil for the last 11 years in all my vehicles. In my trucks I use the dual filter bypass kit, giving the 4.7L V8s an 8 qt capacity. It's a pricey oil change considering the cost of the bypass filters, but the Dakota has 100K on it, and I have only ever done 20K mile oil changes.

Since there is no real space to put an external filter in the Avenger, I plan to run the Amsoil XL 10K oil, and change it at more normal intervals....I want this car to last.:smiley_thumbs_up:
