View Full Version : DRL and wiring?

Hi, I planned to replace original foglights with these Hella daytime runninglights: http://www.orum.fi/index.php/Huomiovalot-LED.html (sorry site is in finnish) I mean those rounded 90mm diameter lights.
I want to connect those that when light switch is 0 every light is off, and when switch is in A (automatic light sensor) mode, those DRL's is on at daytime and headlights turn on at night.

So question is what cable I need to connect those lights that they work only when light switch is on position "A"? Sorry about my bad english:D

I am not completely sure what it is that you mean. Are you trying to bypass the DRLs?

No, my car is EU version and there is no original DRL's like some US models have. I have to put lights on and off everytime when driving because there in Finland you need to have headlights or daytime running lights on even when sun is shining at midday! So I want to save my headlight bulbs and replace original foglights with those Hella DRL's.

So lights should work like this:
-0 every single light is off
-park, parking lights are on
-ON, headlights and tail lights are on
-A, at day only those DRL's are on and when it comes dark, DRL's shut off and head and tail lights are on

Sure it is possible to take current straight from ignition but then DRL's will be on although light switch is off. All I need is find that cable what has current when light switch is on Automatic position.

Well if that is the case, you should be able to head down to your local dealer and have them turn the DRL option on using their StarScan tool. This is what the US cars do. Everything is controlled through the main computer system, TIPM.

Yes that will be the easiest and most clever way to do this but thanks to EU, those low voltage highbeam lights are not allowed to use as DRL's here... Is there somewhere a wiring diagram available?

Yes, I have some wiring diagrams... Let me see what I can find and I will post them up here. I have to do some work stuff, and then I will get to this!!

I was thinking about the following:
1) Change to US settings
2) Wire new lights from battery
3) Use DRL US low power for switching the new lights on via relais (87 type?)

But, you can not have your DRL lights on with headlights on, which is under some conditions realy nice to have (also in Finland)

I think it's easier to connect it like Hella's manual says, there is three wires, ground, + and one what controls whole system and goes to park/headlights. It's illegal to have headlights AND daytime lights on at the same time, I don't know why... So when headlights are on and there is current on that "control wire" DRL's shut off.

+ wire comes straight from ignition lock and DRL's lit automatically when key is in RUN position.

But the problem is that if I make connections like this, then DRL's are ON even when light switch is OFF. So that's why I wanted to know what wire is for "automatic light sensor" position.

I hope you understand what I want:D

Well here is the headlight circuit... and then the parking light circuit. I hope this helps you out!

WOW thats great, thanks a lot! If you have wiring diagram where I can see wires from light switch to TIPM, can you please post it here? It will make things perfect.

Are those pictures from some kind of dodge service manual? Can I buy it somewhere or is it just for dealers and official mechanics?

Yeah, this is from a service manual. Another member was very kind to share this with some of us. I believe you can buy it from eBay somewhere. I will see if I can find a link for you.

I will look for that diagram to the switch when I get home. I don't have access to it at work.

I got those Hella daytime runninglights and there they are. As you can see, I removed original foglights and put those running lights on. They turn on automatically when engine is running and shut off automatically when headlights turn on.

There was three wires, one for ignition, one for parking lights which turns those drl's off when parking lights turn on, and ground.

So did you use a relay with this setup?

No I didn't, those lights have some kind a relay built inside of them so all I needed to do was connect the wires :)

I don't have fog lights anymore, and that doesn't matter because they are worthless.

Hey,

In this year we in Russia have some problem with all time lights on. I have StarScan and I`ll try turn on this function via it.
I tried do it in Caliber (change country code etc) but no result. Maybe it have another wires, maybe needed relay (how in Stratus)
