I was looking through the downloadable pdf manual (too lazy to go out to the car) and saw that it gives the location of the map/reading lights. I thought to myself 'I don't remember seeing them.' So I went out and checked. Not only do I not have map/reading lights, I don't even have a dome light in the front, just one in the middle of the roof.
The manual says "MAP/READING/INTERIOR LIGHTS These lights are mounted between the sun visors above the rear view mirror. Each light is turned ON by pressing the button. Press the button a second time to turn the light OFF. The lights will remain on until the switch is pressed a second time, so be sure they have been turned off before leaving the vehicle. There is a second light located midway back in the headliner."
Does anyone else with an '08 have just the one light?
Could be they haven't updated the pdf version of the manual - I'll have to check the paper manual.
Also, I read a little about the Daytime Running Lamps. When you turn the turn signal on, the DRL on that side goes out till the turn signal turns off. Is this something new? I don't remember ever seeing a car with DRLs wink at me when the turn signal was on.
Is it just me, or does this seem dumb? I am going to be looking at every car at every intersection tomorrow.

You're right. On the SXT it's a $940 option to get map/reading lights. With all the great standard features, and all the options I do have, I can't believe map lights are an option. I thought that was a given on cars these days. They put a marginally useful rechargable flashlight in the Caliber (I never used it once in a year and a half) but not map/reading lights in the Avenger? What are they thinking?
Ok, i'm done ranting. Time to get out the wire cutters and go to work on the one-eyed, look at my burned out headlight, DRLs.

dwk....I think you could go to the dealer and have them starscan it so you don't have DRL's. IIRC, its an option thats enabled via starscan. Of course you paid $40 extra for that option, if that sways you one way or the other...
Or you just don't want it winking when you turn but you like the drl's? lol...i'm dumb...I bet thats what you are talking about!

Can't you just pull the relay for the DRL's? That is what I did on my G6.

I think those front lights were part of the upgraded head liner......

@ AvengerRT. I will probably have the dealer disable them at my first oil change. Besides the whole burned out headlight look, I have drove a few times at dusk and then realized that I hadn't turned the headlights on (no tail lights). That's more dangerous than driving without lights in the daytime - especially in a black car.
@ Sphinx's suggestion. Can anyone confirm that would work on the Avenger.

As long as the DRL has a seperate relay and isn't whooly computer controlled somehow...I would assume it would work.

^ That is kinda what I was asking...lol. I just didn't know if the DRL's were ran via relay, or computer.

Yes Ma Mopar did hook the DRLs to the turnsignals. I didn't notice this until my mom was behind me in her 07 Caliber and her headlight went out. I imagine that it is so oncoming traffic can see you have a blinker on. I was cheap and did not spring for DRLs or map reading lights I didn't realize that I didn't have them until trying to find something that fell in the front floorboard. I always figured that this was a standard option. Oh well I no how to fix it once the warranty is up.

I really hate to say this here... I am a big fan of Dodge... but even the base model Toyota Camry has map lights standard, not as an option. I only know this 'cause I just checked their website - I wouldn't ever consider going that route 'cause their cars all look the same - plain and boring, or fugly.
