420a problems

I just picked up a 1997 with the 420a and 5-spd. I tried searches to see if anyone else has had this problem, but no luck. When i start my car in the cold, it makes a grinding noise from the trans but it stops when i depress the clutch.
And another problem. when i am driving and its in the lower rpm's between 1500 and 3000 and i get heavy on the accelerator it hesitates and sputters. it has a cold air intake if would affect anything. Any input would be appreciated.

Likely a bad throwout bearing for the tranny noise.
For the sputtering I'd run seafoam thru the intake tract.
After running that thru , remove the + terminal and let it sit for 10 minutes or so and reconnect so the computer resets and relearns

thanks. i will give that seafoam a shot. But that grinding noise is only when it's cold after it warms up it's fine. if it is the throwout bearing, what will happen if it goes out completely? and while i have the tranny tore apart what parts do i need to give traction to the other wheel?
