I think you are confused on what the numbers actually represent. The first is the tires width, the second is the percentage of the tires width used for height and the last is the rims diameter.

Doing 55% of 215 is ~4.7"

Doing 55% of 245 is ~4.8"

This shows that the 245/50 is actually larger then the 215/55
Tis true... :)

215/55R18 - Overall Diameter: 27.31 in / 693.67 mm vs. 245/50R18 - Overall Diameter: 27.64 in / 702.05 mm

215/55R18 - Sidewall Height: 4.65 in / 118.11 mm vs. 245/50R18 - Sidewall Height: 4.82 in / 122.42 mm

215/55R18 - Radius: 13.65 in / 346.71 mm vs. 245/50R18 - Radius: 13.82 in / 351.02 mm

Thanks,

John316 and Dubie2003, you explained the size ratios far better than I could have :)

As for negative effects, I have honestly experiences none, I do a fair mileage and aint exactly light with my right foot. Currently only have the larger tyres on the rear, will get some pics on soon. I have tried them on the front and was really wanting to keep them there due to the difference in steering responce and grip, but I think the boys in blue may have had issues with that.

The rim aint that narrow, so the only real difference is you have more of a rim protector with the larger tyre, which I dont see as a bad thing :)

Have Fun :)

Well, this was what I had found online a long while back and posted up here... I just didn't go through all the calculations...

So here is what I come up with...

215/60/R18 -> 215*0.60 = 5.07874"

245/55/R18 -> 245*0.55 = 5.30512"

So the tire is wider, and taller?? Is that right?

Josh... Here is some information on how to pick a tire size:

255/45/18 for example...

The first number is the width of the tire in millimeters, measured from sidewall to sidewall.

The second number is the aspect ratio. This is a ratio of sidewall height to width. In this case, 255x0.45=114.75mm

The last number is the diameter of the wheel in inches.

To figure the outside diameter of a tire, take the sidewall height and multiply by 2,(remember that the diameter is made up of 2 sidewalls, the one above the wheel, and the one below the wheel) and add the diameter of the wheel to get your answer.

I hope this helps you understand those numbers in the tire description!

Spot on. :) (My factory tyres are 215/55R18, but that's besides the point, your math is good) ;)

I find it easier to pump all the variations into the calculator that Drizzie27 posted tho' for that side-by-side comparison view.
