?

Should I...

  1. Get rid of it; get a new car!

  2. It's fine, just refinance it if you need to.

Been having a lot of fun lately with this car. :(

I've already had a few warranty repairs in the past (most recently the washer sprayers broke, hood is already rusting), and I tried to think positive about that, but the issues keep coming.

Most recently I had trips for these issues:
    • the air bag light has been going off intermittently; at least once per day. Dealer reset the code (head rest code) and said to come back.
    • My cabin air fans kept shutting off and... there was smoke coming out from behind my heater/AC controls! When I stopped at the dealer, I was turned away because they didn't have time.
I was livid because, as expected, when I came back the next day the source of the smoke could not be found (if you had looked at it the day before, when it was smoking, you would've found it!) Fans were working perfectly, they opened the dash and found nothing melted.

Insult to injury: I had to pay $120 because there was no successful warranty repair.

I have an appointment booked for Nov 1 for the hood and air bag light. Allegedly I should get reimbursed for that when it's fixed, but we'll see.

The manager of the shop was overhearing my outrage and he's trying to play the "you might have gotten a bad car, here, let's talk about a new car". I think he's just trying to make a buck off me, but it would involve him paying off the last 3 years of my current car which wouldn't really do him any favours. I dunno. I like this car a lot but I am concerned about the rate of issues; I never had this many issues with my Cobalt.

I am paying a ridiculous interest rate on this car (my total loan is 27K, this car is under $15K), so I might go with refinancing instead. A new car is intriguing, though, but I've heard Darts have just as many issues.

I feel your pain but these issues are not common:( I'm sure it will all get ironed out in time.

I can understand your feelings about what to me are small things that are happening. BUT I do my own work and do not have payments to deal with on top of repairs/maint.

The hood problem is a common gripe, but it is NOT rusting. It is aluminium and therefore would be corroding.
The headrest code is somewhat common from anything from a loose connection to strained wires from constant headrest movement.
The sprayers are plastic..That can happen on ANY car..
The interior fan problem ..THAT one I would go after with determination There could have been a number of causes, but it needs to be thoroughly checked out could have been in the control panel or the fan motor.
Good luck to you on what goes on and what you do, would hate to see you "give up" on a nice ride that you have!

You're both right: I am very attached to this car and don't really want to leave it unless I have to. I regretted getting rid of my last car (which was paid off) before I had to, so I initially told myself I was going to keep this car until it dies. I suppose it could be way worse: there's been worse problem reported for these cars.

I think I'll keep her around.
The boys (and Mr Bonejangles) are really attached to the car. ;)

They allegedly took apart the whole dash and found nothing melted. They also ran the heaters on full for about 10 minutes. Fans stayed on, no smoke.

Maybe the act of taking stuff apart jostled something loose.

The next time someone happens, pull out your phone and record it.

Edit... the next time an issue occurs with your car, capture it on your phone.
