That I can believe happening, and my condolences about your mothers misfortunes about her vehicle. Not very easy or low dollar repairs for any car!

    1/14/17 UPDATE:
The Red Runner(BABY) Neon has proven out to be a most enjoyable and reliable set of wheels for my son, and the wife prefers using it also over our other small 4 door Escort that she was to take over! All is holding up quite well after the last repair of having to replace the P. steering/AC belt and tensioner pulley. seems like an easy job to to, but it's not! the pass. side engine plate has to come off to change the tensioner pulley! Took me 4 hours to do start to finish!

Nice to hear from you and thanks, but flat rate book time is a little over 2 hrs.
Of course I had WNY corrosion to deal with and did NOT want to break or strip ANY bolts! Just took my time, no rushing.
POOR Reggie! Let us know when he goes in for surgery!

4/5/17 UPDATE: Well it is officially spring, hopefully the white stuff will be gone for a while. The "Baby, aka Red Runner" has done well thru the almost year of use mechanically. other than normal servicing (LOF, door hinge, lock lubes and such), it looks like time to start doing some minor body work on it. Yes I never did get time for that last summer, pass. side rocker panel and some minor door edge rusting along with minor "tightening up" of front bumper cover. And then some minor tweaking of some interior door panels. Son is VERY happy with his ride and Wife says another Neon for her would be very much to her liking, IF we can find one at least as good or better the the son's ride(with cruise,P/windows and locks of course)! Some people just want EVERYTHING! Also I am going to need to start looking for a replacement to my "Beast"(T&C van), as I need towing/ carry capability. AND all on a "broken shoestring budget"!

Good to hear from you again! Yes the vans are nice for many uses, but mine is showing age pretty bad(body), and in need of struts/shocks and various touch ups mechanically again. But it has over 250K on it,and still runable!
May I suggest trying a dose of Marvel Mystery Oil in your motor oil, It may help "soften up the main seal for a while. I have done this in the past and depending on how bad the leak, it has helped for me with past rides. And GOOD LUCK with a heater core R&R. Like I did, take your time and don't "rush it". I also took A LOT of time looking for the way that I was able to "shortcut" the Neons job, You may find a way to do similar!

Glad things are looking a little brighter then! Being an open message on the site here,I am going to offer another opinion that I am sure will raise somebody's ire. BUT here goes anyway. In my OPINION, synthetics do not do well for leakage control of seals in a higher mileage car. My dad tried switching from conventional to synth. and immediately started noting leaks, and switched back and leaks went away. I have stuck with conventional oils for all my rides, as all are older and at 100K or higher. But again, MY OPINION.

Well a little more work needed to be done on the Neon, and some more new shoes before the end of the month also.
Had to replace the rear pipe and cherry bomb muffler(?), as the winter proved UNKIND to both. $40.00 and much quieter now and not sagging down as it was starting to do. The tires have started "shifting" their belts creating that annoying steering vibration. A common problem that I have seen with this small size tire and our poor road conditions around here. But all in all Normal maint items for age and area conditions. At least now I won't worry that the exhaust note will not "draw the ear" of area Police officers to my now full fledged driver son who uses every excuse to "be out and about"!

    What a BUMMER!
I had to spend a whopping 3 bucks and replace the speedo cluster light bulbs(they quit on the way home from sons school concert Thurs. night) on a soon to be 14 yr old car! Had more panel disassembly work to do to get at them than most other cars that I have dealt with. Timewise a shop or dealer would have wanted $50.00 labor for my 30 minute "chore"! At least the son and wife will be able to see how fast they are going at night now.
Guess they just don't make ANYTHING to last anymore!!!....LOL;)

Continuation of my LAST COMMENT...Although posted on Sat. the "chore" was done on Friday. Saturday I went and got 4 new tires for the Neon at Walmart as all 4 had shifted belts and was like a continuous massage (vibration) to ride in. The tires were only 13k on them, but I knew that the brand and model of tire had PROBLEMS for this happening
(another .. they don't make anything to last situation). Well the NEW tires are GREAT and even with WM's extra fee, road hazard warranty, they were still far less expensive than anywhere else.Same brand but different "model" of tire.
HOWEVER the "tech" doing the tires saw something that I had missed seeing in my normal "check overs", the RF axle bearing had quite an amount of "play in it. NO noise just play, so Sunday after Worship a stop at AZ and $25 for a new bearing and today I replaced that. On these one has to R&R the whole steering knuckle and press out the old and press in the new one, pretty proud of myself as I don't have an actual hydraulic press to do it! And start to finish time for the whole job was 2 hours taking my time with a short break(ROOT BEER & a cigarette)once the old bearing was out! Again, the situation of "they don't make anything to last anymore", ORIGINAL bearing with 146k and soon 14yrs old!...LOL;)
