2011 Avenger 3.6 Acceleration problems :(

Hey everyone!

I've been trying to google some answers to my problems, but haven't quite found a definite answer.

I recently(about 3 weeks ago) bought a 2011 Dodge Avenger 3.6l with about 38k miles on it. It's been absolutely great, I love the car! It accelerated nicely, had no problems at all! But as soon as I hit 40k miles, things seem like they're falling apart :(.

The car seems to accelerate like my previous car, a 2008 Nissan Versa Hatchback. Not all the time, but I usually have to really step on the gas to get the car to go, and just drove home from work today and had a hard time getting up a steep hill(I can usually turn left onto the hill at a near stop and hit 35 in just a few seconds, this time, it was almost stuck at 25-30 even though I was stepping on the gas).

Basically, the car feels like it's puttering around, like an old car you'd see in a movie. Also, often, I'll hit about 40mph and the car seems to want to just stay there, the engine sounds somewhat dull, and to get the car to go faster, I'll step on the gas harder, and the car goes from 2k rpm(it rarely goes over) to 3k rpm, speeds to 45-50, and goes back to 2k instantly.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm not knowledgeable on cars at all unfortunately. I plan on bringing it back to the dealer to get it fixed, but I'd love a good idea before I go there(it's a two hour ride).

Thanks! :kap:

Welcome to the forum! I'm sure someone will be able to help out. Is the check engine light on? Strange that it would start suddenly like that especially with fairly low mileage. Could be a bad sensor of some sort or possibly some bad gas. Did it start doing that shortly after a fill up?

Thank you :) !

Well I mean I usually do go through a tank of gas every 4-5 days, so I've burned through gas that I had when it started happened. I can't quite remember whether it started right after a fill up or not, though...

I have read online that this specific car can run on E85 fuel, and I haven't been using it at all as I've read online that it gives lower mileage, and theres only two gas stations in my area that have it and theyre about 30 minutes away(although one is near work so that is not bad).

And no, the check engine light hasn't come on yet. I've been reading numerous posts and questions online answered with things like an "IAC"(I should look that up to see what it is), dirty air filter, etc etc.

Maybe it could be the fuel I'm getting as I only go to Cumberland Farms for gas... I could always try somewhere else but I actually just filled up this morning as I was empty :(...

Can the brakes be possibly be dragging? My '93 Duster did almost the same thing. It would work happen right after a stop sign, red light, turning on to a street, drove me nuts as it would last about 5-10 minutes then be fine. I finally noticed that it was happening after I had applied the brakes. Turned out the rear brakes were dragging/not releasing on braking then "break free" after driving for a few minutes returning the car to somewhat normal..

Put your hand near the back rims close to the brake caliper area after going for a drive. If it seems extremely warm you could have a caliper that is seizing up. Chrysler has had bad calipers on numerous vehicle lines for a number of years. My son's 11 Journey had both going before he traded it off for 14 Grand Caravan.

Weird thing that I've noticed.

Floor mats gets jammed up under the accelerator pedal, gives the perception that the car is bogging down when I hit the gas.

Also you could try recalibrating the accelerator pedal

Definitely not the floor mat, I even took it out to make sure! I tried the recalibration but I'm not 100% sure I got it right myself. I tried doing it evenly for 15 seconds but it is pretty difficult lol.

It's a weird issue, it's not all the time when I brake, or accelerate. It's in between everything. I can be driving at whatever the speed limit is, let go of the gas to just go with the road, and after a few seconds, I'll hit the gas just a little bit to speed up and the car feels like it gets either pulled back or pushed forward. It's hard to explain. It's like, jerky or something.

Sometimes when I'm nearly idling, the car shakes/vibrates a lot from inside.

Someone did tell me that the car somewhat staying at 40 is normal; as if it's a standard staying in shift(so it stays at whatever speed rather than shifting).

I'm more worried about the weird shaking and vibrations I'm feeling, and that puttering feeling I get sometimes.

Also, is 1.75k-2k rpm normal for this car? I mean, I can go 85mph on the highway and it barely goes over 2k rpm. I don't mind it, but I did randomly find a video on youtube of someone driving the same car, and their video showed that the car was around 2.5-3k rpm at 40mph.

Also, to get back to the other guys, I'm not really sure what brake dragging is, but maybe? the weird shaking is normally when I'm braking, especially at lights, or high speeds. It's also randomly when I'm just driving and let go of the pedals.

and are calipers expensive to replace? I'll have to go for a drive and look online at what a caliper looks like. Maybe it's covered by my warranty if its seizing up

Bah, I didnt see an edit box for my post, I'm sorry for posting again, but, could it be the tires??

It's one thing I completely overlooked when I purchased the car. They are SO worn down it's ridiculous. I noticed today, actually, how dumb of me as I've looked at the brake pads through the spokes as best I could, and just never noticed the tread level. If you were to take a U.S penny and stick it in the deepest spot on the tread of my tires, it would be at the "b" in "Liberty" (sticking the "L" facing the tire". So that's maybe, 1/6" or less I would say?

Wow I wasn't thinking at all about the caliper location. Would I just be able to feel the caliper for warmth?

Also, today, I couldn't get the car to shake, or the steering wheel. I mean, the wheel did shake a little, but not nearly as bad as normal.(I did get my tires rotated and balanced yesterday morning, but the car was still shaky on the ride home).

Anyways, for my other problem with acceleration, I did manage to take a few videos today while driving that show the problem a little. I know I shouldnt record and drive, but it's the only way I could show in detail the problem.

I'll basically be driving at speeds such as 40mph, and the car doesn't wanna speed up, or slow down some times(obviously it slows down if I brake). I'll be giving it some gas, and it stays at 40mph. Keep giving more and more gas slowly, nothing happens, and all of a sudden the rpm jumps and the car seems to boost forward for a fraction of a second, though the mph barely increases, or doesn't.

The car is generally between 1.5k-2k rpm normally, but sometimes when I'm driving at 40mph and this happens, I can see on my dashboard that the rpm is slightly decreasing, to about 1k. Anyone have any ideas on this?

Hey everyone,

It's been a while since I posted about my issue, but I managed to read somewhere online about calibrating the throttle by either taking out a specific fuse, or using the gas pedal. I tried both ways, and each time, the ride becomes extremely smooth for a while.

After a couple drives, the car again wants to stay at 40, and, I'm not sure if the term, maybe it's called "knocks"? I'll let off the gas, let the car show down on it's own, and then go back on the gas, and the car seems to jerk around when I give it gas...

I did read that people suggest resetting the calibration, and driving fast for a while.. my area around my house is mostly back roads that you have to go slow on, so should I reset it somewhere near a highway and just go for it for a while?

If this method of driving fast is how to fix this issue, could I just reset the throttle, put the parking brake on, go into neutral and keep it at a steady 2500-3000 rpm or something?

The dealership sent me away to visit a dodge dealership, which I just came home from. Of course, they didn't feel anything wrong :i_rolleyes:
