I have a 2008 Avenger... 4 cyl, 95k. Oil pan is very very rusty, needs to be changed.

My big question is what to use to seal the pan. RTV Sealer? Paper Gasket? Both?

I've read that the paper gasket that came with the pan would be sufficient. Other people say use JUST the sealer. Some people have said to use the RTV to hold the paper gasket in place before screwing the pan on. Thoughts? How tos? Advice?

Also, any other general advice on how to get this job done would be great! I.e., common problems / issues when doing this job.

Thank you all!!

I'm an RTV guy.

A GM engineer told me that the biggest issue they had with RTV being used in service was that people would apply the RTV, then they would wait too long before assembly.

Make sure everything is clean, and do a dry fit before applying the RTV . Don't rush, but don't waste too much time after the RTV is on.

When possible, get all the bolts started, before you torque them down.

When possible, sneak up on the final torque; tighten all the bolts a little, once or twice before the final torque.

On the 2.4L, this isn't exactly possible, because of the A/C bracket. There is one or two pan bolts that need to be fully torqued, because the bracket covers the pan bolts.
